About
The race
The South Devon Coastal Marathon was the original Endurancelife coastal trail event. It is now the most popular of all the coastal races, and has become a cult classic. The course is contained within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The course is tough. While picturesque, it is equally punishing, following a coastline which is both rugged and stunningly beautiful. As a trail running course this race may be described “as as good as it gets”. To help protect the south Devon coast application for the South Devon Coastal Marathon is limited to only 500 runners. Applicants are advised to apply as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The event sells out every year, and you’ll soon see why as you weave your way around the technical coastline, before heading inland to tackle a few of the infamous Devon hills!

Pro tips
Racing it
- 01
Technical coast first
The route weaves around technical coastline before heading inland to the Devon hills, so run the early coastal miles within yourself and save something for the climbing later.

Cold, exposed January
Typical race-day temperature here is about 7.3C, and the Beesands coast is rugged and exposed, so expect wind and spray to make it feel colder than the number suggests.

Rugged, punishing ground
The course is described as tough and punishing rather than fast, so train on trails and technical terrain and expect slower going than your road marathon pace.

Small field, enter early
The race is capped at only 500 runners and sells out every year, so get your entry in as soon as you decide to run.
From the entry
In Beesands
Getting to Beesands
Beesands is a small village on Start Bay reached by narrow country lanes, so driving is the practical option and parking near the village fills quickly on race morning.
Where to watch
The South West Coast Path runs along the shore here, giving spectators easy viewpoints over the beach, the village and the headland as runners pass.
After the race
The South Hams towns of Kingsbridge and Dartmouth are the nearest places for food and a wander, and a gentle walk along Slapton Sands helps ease stiff legs.
