How it works

Pace is your finish time divided by the distance. A marathon is 42.195 km (26.2 miles) and a half is 21.0975 km (13.1 miles), so a 3:30:00 marathon works out at 4:59 per km, or 8:01 per mile. The splits assume you hold that pace all the way: the time at each marker is the pace multiplied by the distance covered.

The tables show the pace that finishes exactly on the goal time. To get under it, run a little quicker: a few seconds per km covers the time lost in a crowded start and at drinks stations, and the extra distance from running wide.

Questions

What pace is a 4-hour marathon?
5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile, held for all 42.195 km. That puts you through halfway in 2:00:00.
What pace do I need for a sub-3-hour marathon?
An average of 4:16 per km (6:52 per mile) finishes in about 3:00:00. Holding 4:15 per km gets you in at 2:59:20, and most runners aim a few seconds per km quicker still, to leave room for a crowded start, drinks stations and the last 10 km.
What pace is a 2-hour half marathon?
5:41 per km, or 9:09 per mile, over 21.0975 km.
Should I run even splits?
Even pacing, the same speed from start to finish, is the most reliable way to run your best time on a flat course: starting too fast costs far more at the end than it saves early on. On a hilly course, aim for even effort instead, and expect slower kilometers uphill.
Why is my watch distance longer than the race?
Courses are measured along the shortest line a runner could take. Weaving around others and taking corners wide usually adds a few hundred meters over a marathon, so pace off the course markers rather than your watch's lap times.
