  Würzburg's old town sits on the Main and is compact enough to walk end to end. On race day, trams and your own two feet are the reliable options, since the streets near the river and the center fill with runners and spectators.

• Best Vantage Points

  The Alte Mainbrücke and the Main riverbank are the classic spots to watch the field go by, and the Residenz with its gardens is a short walk away for a change of scene between viewings.

• Wine Town Recovery

  This is Franconian wine country with a large student population, so the old town stays lively into the evening. A gentle walk up through the vineyards toward Marienberg Fortress is the local way to shake out a marathon.
