About

The race

An exclusive refuge for millionaires in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Jekyll is a 4000-year-old barrier island with 10 miles of beaches. Today it's an unusual clash of wilderness, historically preserved buildings, modern hotels and a massive campground. It's an easily navigable place – you can get around by car, horse or bicycle. With that being said, the Under the Oaks Run is the place to be!!The annual Under the Oaks Half Marathon is set to take runners on an out-and-back loop tour of Jekyll Island, one of the most beautiful and historic of Georgia’s “Golden Isles,” which played a role in the creation of the U.S. federal reserve system back in the early 20th century.Known perhaps best today for its historic Jekyll Island Club Hotel, whose moss-draped oak trees tower over the grassy lawns inside the Jekyll Island Historic District, the island played host to a meeting in 1910 of Senator Nelson Aldrich and the assistant secretary of the Treasury A. Piatt Andrew, as well as five of the nation’s leading bankers. From that came the legislation that created the banking system we know today as the Federal Reserve. But the island is known to most people for much more than that now, as much of it is protected as a state park — by law, 65 percent of the land on the island must be set aside and left in as natural a state as possible, with plenty of parks for the people of Georgia to enjoy.

Pro tips

Racing it

  1. 01

    Same Route Twice

The course is out-and-back, so you'll retrace the island tour. Use the return leg to focus on familiar landmarks and steady pacing rather than surprises.

  2. 02

    Warm Coastal Day

Typical race-day temperature is 22.4°C, so expect mild to warm, possibly humid conditions. Start conservatively and use aid stations early.

  3. 03

    Historic District Tour

The route tours Jekyll Island, including the Historic District with moss-draped oaks. Expect a mix of preserved buildings and natural island scenery.

  4. 04

    No Point-to-Point Shuttle

Because it's an out-and-back, the start and finish are in the same area. You don't need separate finish-line transport; plan your parking and warm-up there.

  5. 05

    Protected Island Miles

By law, 65 percent of Jekyll Island is left natural, so parts of the course may feel wild and quiet. Keep your own rhythm when crowds thin.

In Jekyll Island

  • Island Navigation

Jekyll Island is small and easy to navigate by car or bicycle. On race morning, allow extra time to park near the start and avoid the busiest roads.

  • Spectator Spots

Spectators can watch from the Historic District's oak-lined lawns or near the beach. The island is compact, so it's easy to move between vantage points.

  • Post-Race Recovery

After the race, take a gentle walk or bike ride along the island's paths and beaches. The quiet state park setting is ideal for easing tired legs.
