About

The race

Antelope Canyon is a slot canyon in the American Southwest. It is located on Navajo land east of Page, Arizona. Antelope Canyon includes two separate, photogenic slot canyon sections, referred to individually as Upper Antelope Canyon or The Crack; and Antelope Canyon or The Corkscrew. The Navajo name for Upper Antelope Canyon is Tsé bighánílíní, which means "the place where water runs through rocks." Lower Antelope Canyon is Hazdistazí or "spiral rock arches." Both are located within the LeChee Chapter of the Navajo Nation.Antelope Canyon was formed by erosion of Navajo Sandstone, primarily due to flash flooding and secondarily due to other sub-aerial processes. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, making the corridors deeper and smoothing hard edges in such a way as to form characteristic ‘flowing’ shapes in the rock.On this 50m course you will experience two of the most photographed land features in the country; Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River. After traversing the desert sand and slickrock to reach these unbelievable features, the run finishes out on smooth single track around the plateau that the city of Page, AZ is built upon, with jaw-dropping views of Lake Powell.

Pro tips

Racing it

  1. 01

    Cold 5.4C start

Typical race-day temperature is around 5.4C, so the start will be genuinely cold in the desert. Wear layers you can shed once you warm up on the sand and slickrock.

  2. 02

    Sand and slickrock

The route crosses desert sand and slickrock before reaching the canyon country, and that footing runs slower than road. Bank time on the firm single track around the Page plateau.

  3. 03

    Canyon bottlenecks

Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River both sit on the course, and they are the spots where runners bunch up. Decide in advance whether you are stopping for them.

  4. 04

    Navajo Nation land

The course runs on Navajo Nation land in the LeChee Chapter east of Page, a slot canyon formed by flash flooding. Stay on the marked route and respect local restrictions.

In Page

  • Small town, thin services

Page is a small town built to house Glen Canyon Dam workers, so lodging fills fast around race weekend and most services sit along the main highway strip. Book and stock up before you arrive.

  • Where to watch

Spectators can watch from the Horseshoe Bend overlook area, a short walk from the highway lot, or from open ground near the Lake Powell shoreline where the plateau views stretch out.

  • Easy post-race walking

For recovery, the Wahweap and Lake Powell shoreline areas and the Glen Canyon Dam viewpoint give easy, flat walking to loosen up. Desert air dries you out fast, so keep drinking after the finish.
