About
The race
The Alexander the Great Marathon is a race like no other, tracing the legendary path between Pella, the birthplace of Alexander the Great, and Thessaloniki, Greece’s vibrant northern capital. Since 2006, this AIMS-certified marathon has drawn elite and amateur runners alike. The Alexander the Great Marathon is an ideal race for setting a personal best (PB), thanks to its mostly flat and fast course. The marathon follows a direct route from Pella to Thessaloniki, with long, open stretches and minimal turns, allowing for efficient pacing. While the scenery is limited—passing through open fields and small villages—the race is safe and well-organized, with frequent hydration stations. Runners should be prepared for limited crowd support outside of Thessaloniki. The final stretch in Thessaloniki offers the best atmosphere, with supporters gathering near the finish. If you’re looking for a fast, distraction-free marathon in a nice destination, this is the race to target.
